less like high school
remember how highschool got easier in senior year. once you were accepted to a school and all that was taken care of all you really had to do was not screw it up. other than that - things were pretty much wrapped.
college isnt looking to mirror that at all. or maybe this search for a job is like the search for your college. maybe im just lazier now than i was then and so its not the work thats harder but motivating myself. i dont really know. either way im staring down this Insiders Guide to Clinical Psych Master/PhD path and i think im gonna lose this battle.
In other words - not working tomorrow, and hoping that in my new found free time (yeah i told myself this last night about my classes cancelled today) I will start working on something whether it be a job search, this insiders guide, or starting to plan out any of my papers for the semester before i get behind. anyway out hopefully by the time i go to do one of these tomorrow night I have accomplished something on that list.
with that said im jumping in bed. here's to a productive tomorrow - for everybody!
cheers

on your feet
watching remember the titans - its interesting to see how many people are in this movie like Chris Turk (scrubs) or Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson) and even Hayden Panettiere (Heroes). Reminds me of another football movie that was on TV last week during the day that I've never watched all the way through - Any Given Sunday. Again aside from the obvious Al Pacino there are alot of people in this movie - Dennis Quaid, Jamie Foxx, LL Cool J, Bill Bellamy, Aaron Eckhart, Elizabeth Berkley, Charlton Heston, John C. Mcginley...Ok you get the point. How is it that these movies sneak in so much talent (does not apply to everyone *cough Dennis cough*)?
In other news, last night after getting out of night class I headed with Chris Mulgannon to Houston and 2nd ave (whole trip by foot btw) in an attempt to use my invitation from NYCmoviescreenings and see Paranormal Activity (low budget horror film) for free at an advanced screening. I was unaware that everyone who signs up gets 'invited' and that its first come first serve. I was also unaware at how many people would see a midnight movie during the week, especially when that movie is a severely underadvertised Blair-Witch style low budget horror movie. Lesson definitely learned. Free is free.
Night wasnt a waste - got Pinkberry (1st time) and spent an hour walking in areas of the city I had not walked through before. And in the long run I got home earlier which meant a bit more sleep before my earlier wake up to come home.
Caught up on my TV shows for the week - Fringe was good - lots of bits but fell back into the Monster-Of-The-Week and most dissapointingly - this had nothing to do with ZFT or the pattern - it was more like a page out of the X-files with a singe person and a bad science experiment.
Flashforward premiere was great - definitely had alot of Lost vibes but not in a bad way - was beautifully shot, and had a nice little teaser in it. looking forward to where this show will go.
Dollhouse came back tonight and while it had a less than stellar case-of-the-week the little bits about the personalities of the dolls leaking through, topher's 'contract' to make them certain ways and other tidbits were really great. I think if this show can really believe in itself and not try to function as a crime drama it will really take off - but until then it will revel in mediocrity with teases of greatness. it has alot of dreams i just hope it has the balls/time to elaborate on them.
this is long, and i apologize. to finish - everyone should check out the brand new album - Daisy. it is definitely another vibe different from their last albums and isnt as easy to jump into. they have taken a little less time considering the ears and ease of the listening process but the album is actually really incredible even if it takes a few listens to adapt to.
the end.

time to get ill
short post. im hot and have to get in bed. today was great - first day of volunteering - cant wait for tomorrow. on my walk today there was just this strange visual similarity between whats pictured below and something that i didn't recall right away. later i realized that somehow this picture reminds me of an urban version of the decaying stage on the beach in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. I didnt take the picture until my way back and so its not exactly the same, and there is now a bus in the way slightly interfering with this similarity - but it was interesting to me, nonetheless. I wouldnt go so far as to say they look the same so much as the looking through the foreground structure into the distance mixed with the sky had a similar vibe as the perspective in the movie from the beach side looking through the stage back into the city.

its all lies
no this isnt some statement or anything. instead this is about how im posting using someone elses' wireless because despite my computer reading a perfect signal from my router i have no internet connection. i dont know what the problem is. my phone reads full bars, computer, as does chris' computer. the apt has internet because we plugged right into the modem and it worked - so for some reason the router is telling us its sending us a signal but it is in fact not doing that at all. so thats baffling. gonna have to work on that tomorrow. ah well. hopefully i can get the internet to accept a picture with this blog otherwise i might be out of luck.
(this was the internet i used to make the post, went back to add the picture using NETGEAR - thanks to those people for letting me borrow some signal).

theres no place like home
no matter how bad we might play or how bad we might lose there is just something about being at that stadium that is just awesome - whether everyone is cheering, silent in tension, or booing a fellow eagle who we will probably cheer for 2 minutes later.
so yeah - todays game fell apart but it was still awesome to be back there. heres to a great season!

coming home to family
came home today. went to pops house with my dad and we got a pizza and watched the phils game.
also came home to two movie passes sitting on my dresser. and in cleaning out my wallet i found another movie pass that i thought i had lost - that makes 3 AMC passes and 1 Regal pass from the regal rewards card. thats a decent amount of free flicks. time to catch up on the movies i missed.

flashbacks
no this is not lost or opposite day thus being about flashfoward. intstead it has to do with todays picture which felt like i was in high school again but not necessarily in a bad way.
anyway - today was alright. had an interesting experience with the ram van that ultimately boiled form 'the van is broken they're sending another one' to 'the van needs maintenance - someone is coming' to 'theres something with the keys' which eventually was made clear by the fishing of the car keys out of the storm drain on the street. there was a lot more involved but i dont feel like typing it out.
as much as i would like to regress to that of a 10 year old and ignore decisions and responsibility and all the ugliness ahead and instead run outside and play, i cannot and as such just purchased "Insider's Guide to Graduate Programs in Clinical and Counseling Psychology: 2008/2009 Edition" by recommendation of Tracy Prout.
Looks like there is no turning back after all.
edit: decided not to include said picture. instead i am replacing it with one i took earlier in the day. i like it more - fits more with the whole wanting to return to 10 years old. and don't worry - i joined in after taking this.

new places new things im sore
so...today was long. waking up for a movie in the city playing before noon makes your day seem instantly longer - something associated with movies and night time makes adjusting to it being not even 2pm after the film difficult.
soccer started and went well although im super sore. we didnt win but we had fun and meghan took a ball to the face only to say i cant feel anything. later she told us if anytihng she was more into the game after it. hell yeah
going home this weekend.
another rule broken - i was trying to use a tweeted picture as my picture of the day but this one more says it than anyitnhg else i took today. was really cool to go to this theatre - new theatres are a treat most times and this one had a bunch of classic movie quotes bordering the tops of the walls. very classy.

a love for the hard copy
i really think there is something to the hard copy of things. That being said - iTunes 9 just included LP mode which is more interactive and expansive on the digital album art work. And while it may be a very exciting and cool feature for a band's art i would rather have the physical casing. - which is one of the reasons why i will purchase an album i really want to support or have the actual copy of.
It is not often that I buy an album but sometimes I do, whether it is to support a band I really like, or maybe because it comes with a DVD or what ever reason. Today I decided I wanted to support Thrice by buying Beggars. They got screwed when their album (like Wolverine's movie) leaked onto the internet way in advance. They were forced to move up the digital release of the album to a week later on iTunes so as to not totally be in the hole from this. Today the album was released on hard copy and through both sympathy over the shitty situation and wanting to monitarily support a band who has plenty of releases, most of which I have, but none of which I have actually bought. - so this wasnt so much of wanting the copy for its art or anything as much as supporting the band monetarily and also benefiting from the 5 bonus songs you could attain through the hard copy.
I also bought Muse's The Resistance out of curiousity
But in regards to my point at the top - I bought Portugal. The Man's Satanic Satanist (which came out a little while ago).
The winner goes to the latter of the purchases. Not to comment on quality of the music on the three albums but on worthiness of a hard copy. I have never seen an album packaging/art as extravagant as this one. It is really awesome and totally worth every penny even if the cd was not good (which is not the case at all). The design of this case is something that, depisite getting the same art through iTunes, the presentation would be lost.
Tomorrow I will see H2 (if all goes according to plan) and finish the night with our first Intramural Soccer match. I am so out of shape and will be sore for a week (just in time for the next match) from it but I am so glad we got this to happen. It will be a lot of fun.

uphill battle
so today i realized something. i am not who i was in 8th grade, or high school for that matter. what i mean by that is - when i played sports whether it was soccer or what i very rarely came out of the game. not because i was the star or anything like that but because i never needed a break. i remember in indoor - i subbed out once and recalled it had been the first time all season (this was like one of the last games) that i actually came off the field.
tonight we played a 'half-court' style game of soccer and within 15 minutes i had a severe cramp that wasnt just like a strain but a sharp very debilitating pain. luckily after a lot of nonchalant playing it passed and i was fine, but that is a bad sign. i never claimed to be in any kind of shape but that is also pretty bad. hopefully this soccer thing will work out to be more than just something fun to do.
had my last of my first classes today - my biopsych lab. so far i'd say that the majority of the psych courses here have been friendly. mainly reading heavy in the assignments and very rarely more than one big paper and the mid term and final. biopsych is not friendly - it will be a real real challenge but one im excited for because this is basically what the biology course should have been for psych students instead of learning about kingdoms and extinctions.
also - im happy to see so many new posts today. id link them in here as a shout out but no one who id link isnt already reading/aware of the other peoples blogs so its really not worth it. it is however nice to have so many different new blog updates at once.
last bit - ran in to mike deasey prior to the soccer match. was coming from class and was wearing like non-mesh shorts and skate shoes and thought - ok i dont think i can get away with this, but deasey isnt probably serious about this so im sure ill be fine in this if hes coming - he was in shorts and a t-shirt and a pair of tigers - he informed me that he had to get changed for our scrimmage - apparently that wasnt sports-ready so i quickly realized that my skate shoes and non-mesh shorts wouldnt fly. so i donned the most sporty pair of shoes i had - my tigers. apparently not sporty enough for deasey but they are the best i got. and theyll do for the season - minus a slight traction problem. i did fall a bunch. but i've recently been told i seem to be off-balance alot so maybe its not the shoes.

the way you make-uh me feel.
tonight's blog post title is brought to you by mike's computer and the song playing from it that i can hear in my room. no im not complaining - im groovin to it and wishing i had gotten a chance to see the king of pop in my lifetime. unfortunate. but im not here to reflect on that.
today was great and totally filled up with the only thing youd want to follow a weekend like the one i had and the only thing you want to really wake up to on a sunday. and thats a day of football.
the nfl season is officially back, underway and to a great start. not only did the eagles win (understatement) but the colts also did (barely).
but today wasnt just a good day for my football teams or teams limited to football either. in regards to my roomates - san fran beat arizona ending a 2 season sweep of their own division. the jets took the W from the texans (which cost me a fantasy victory - but its ok). also - the pack pulled out a W in a perfectly orchestrated play in the final 2 minutes of the game. and in other sports - the phils took 2 from the mets (which isnt a feat these days) to sweep that series. so the picture that follows for today is of nothing unique or in any way something you wouldnt see if you came over here right now. but it does capture the location and activity of the day - on the couch (save for the eagles game at applebees) watching the games and doing nothing. great.

old toys revisited
i get bored with things as quickly as i am excited by them. its a problem and a beautiful one. while it can be annoying to loose that spark of inspiration on an idea, project, or anything really - its also nice because it allows me the constant search and exploration of things. ive played nearly every sport one would typically play in childhood. ive tried different instruments. i have tried my hand at drawing, film making/editing, photography, music, etc. its been fruitful in the sense that in the unending search for inspiration and enjoyment i have tried many things.
last year i asked for a camera for my birthday as i have always loved photography and wanted to do it myself. since then its been used in serious efforts only a handful of times. today sparked a reemergence in photography. i broke out my camera finally decided to start understanding it. not allowing myself to use any preset settings like Portrait or Macro I put the camera on manual and manual focus and worked at, in a dimly lit room with no flash - trying to get the right shutter speed, aperature, etc to result in a decent photograph. thanks to the patience of my roommates/alex i was able to try this out on them as they played rock band (which made for long shutter exposure pictures to be a blur of color). below are some of the pictures that i kept that are decent at best but came at the hand of self discovery through adjusting settings and nothing automatic or preset.

the wonders of a trail left behind
i got a package from home today delivered. i found out that even if it isnt fedex the delivery man will buzz up and see if anyone is home to retrieve it. on the positive side - it was successfully delivered. on the negative side i still dont know what happens if no one is here to receive it. hmm.
more classes, more beatles rock band. had to fight the urge to follow the twitter feed and run from LC to 42nd street for an advanced and free screening of Zombieland. instead i sat in a 2.5 hour lecture on the history of trauma. im proud of me too.
finally - theres a place called The High Line. I guess its not so much a place as it is an old rail line that runs from below the numbered streets to 34th street around 10th ave (aka the west side) It was no longer being used and in jeopardy of being removed/knocked down - how ever you want to phrase it and people spoke up saying it could be used for other things - and that meant less costs for the city. In June of this year it was reopened as sort of a walking park.
I originally thought that the reopening combined the overgrowth and decay of the railroad with some new construction and planting, but I was wrong. Looking at photos they actually cleared the entire track and reconstructed it to look like, loosely, like an overgrown railway. While it is partially upsetting that the original track and the natural overgrowth was all removed, it is probably due to the lack of safety that probably existed with using a naturally decaying place as a park.
Info on the place can be found at The HighLine. There is an Images tab that I suggest you check out - documents in thumbnails different eras of the train: when it ran, from 1999-2006 in a gallery documenting the remnants and natural overgrowth taking place on an abandoned area an then the documentation of the clearing, construction, painting, etc of the new park. This is a place to visit for me before the weather makes it less desirable to walk around in the city for long periods of time.

laziness, blurriness and the two AM mark creeping up
so the title is meant to be read in the melody/tempo of two coins. i know it doesnt really fit but the song is in my head despite having never actually listened to it. my roommates play it alot and whether id like it or not im enjoying their rendition - although thats typical.
i have more to say about the on goings of today and all that but lets leave this one short. tomorrow is everyones (for the most part) day off here at fordham and ill start it off by making this a breeze to get through.
cheers

this is how we sober up
last night after coming back, writing my blog post, brushing my teeth, and turning out the light i heard a noise. after hearing such noise and deciding to ignore it i realized how instantly i became totally settled in and comfortable. seconds later my door swung open and three people came flying in and jumping into my bed. this wasnt your typical 'lets jump on him for a minute' this was going to last much longer. having previously decided that they were too awake and drunk to call it a night - claire and jake along with andrew decided to join me in my bed turning what was once a cool and indescribable comfort into a party. i would say close to 70 pictures were taken by andrew after claire gave up because 'subject was too dark' - the lense cap was on. this picture was in color but i made it black and white in an attempt to make it look darker as the colored version would have you believe it was in fact not 3 am and pitch black in the room.
yes i had been amazingly comfortable and yes i was ready to sleep, however it was quite awesome. all of a sudden it was 4 am and we were moving to the living room to jump on more people sleeping there. beer(s) were cracked, music was played and we refound our own beds an hour-ish later. awesome
also - found out today only after wasting $1.75 on drying my whites that 'you shouldnt use the left dryer. it doesnt work'. noted for the future.

i feel like the more i do the more time i have
something i was made aware of today. and while its not 100% of the time true - the days were you are ambitious - not the days where you have to get alot done and do - racing the clock or w/e but leisurely accomplished days where you decide to get all the things done you havent had time for because all of a sudden you have time. on these days it seems like you can accomplish millions of things and look and the clock and wonder how early it is. then by contrast theres those days you set out to do things and you never really gt into the grove and before you know it is the am hours and your wondering how all the time passed by whn you have so little to show for your day.
this picture is what i have to show for my day. not to say i wasnt somewhat productive - i did get alot done in the living room in terms of sorting out all of our electronics, cables, etc. made dinner, bought my books for classes this fall online and worked on some music. even still every day i wake up with the goal of hanging up all my posters and making this place look a bit more homey but each day its time for a blog post and the posters lay in a pile. i made some progress - i separated them into a pile for the living room and a pile for my room and what i mean by that is a pile of posters that are agreeable and the ones that i hav to keep in my room because no one cares for the subject matter (fair enough - but just pointing out that little thought went into the separation process).
i started writing some music again inspired by a friend who had a sudden surge too. we should have our first TSRJ practice this upcoming weekend and with our new drummer. im excited.
(picture is of the 3 magazine-make-shift-stands i made that have provided as a rise/shelf for my psych books).

it left as quickly as it arrived
During my 3rd class today, and probably sparked by what we were talking about at the time i had an idea. every so often i sorta get an idea in my head and run with it almost essay like on a specific topic or societal 'given' just kinda reflecting on it whether to just take a step back or to put a spin on something. sometimes i write them down, and unfortunately this wasnt one of those times. by the time i could have written it down i couldnt remember even a second of it. like when you will wake up from a vivid dream and 5 minutes later you cannot even recall any of it other than maybe the mood of it. those moments are almost maddening at how quickly it escapes you. i remember working in early highschool and coming up with a task to occupy myself and before i got to the back of the store or where ever i needed to go to start it i would forget what my intentions even were. scary.
anyway classes started for me today. my first teacher was wearing white jeans that were probably too tight given he was a male of probably his early 40s. either way he was a good lecturer - first days are tough because theres no 'pick up where we left off' smooth contiuation of sorts, no one has any texts, and a lot of the time you have never seen this person, heard their speech, watched their mannerisms and that first hour can almost set the tone and make up your mind for the semester. he looks to be really. my other classes followed suit (is that the right spelling?) and i got out early of my night class which was hell to get to. after having our internet/cable transfered from across the hall the wireless wasnt registering and i had about 10 minutes to print my course schedule and show it to the ram van people to get my passes for the semester before the van would leave and i would definitely be late. after taking care of all of that i realized that i didnt even know what room the class was in and knew no one taking it.
for the most part though everything worked out. as i said - we got out early. the ride back was great because i ended up chatting with a friend who ended up emailing me later a list of about 20 places i could volunteer for psych experience. got back to fordham during the opening montage of UP and was thrilled to not only be back in time to watch but also to find out that a large chunk of friends were already set up dead center.
night was topped off by 2 separate Cmaj chord progression medleys with me and my roommates encompassing the greater bit of the 90s hits but also including some throw backs like ABC and even a bit of RESPECT at one point - the longer of the two jams clocking in at almost an hour, the other close to 40 minutes. its amazing how many songs you will realize fit over the same progression. if you doubt me - start with Allstar by smashmouth, head into Closing Time by Semisonic and your on your way to singing all your favorite 90s songs until your arm or voice get too tired.

6 months
so today, after almost 6 months without taking any medication for anything i buckled and got some benedryl. After realizing how unquestioningly and how often i was taken asprin of some sort for almost daily headaches i decided that not only was this probably not healthy it also wasnt allowing my immune system to work on its own. at that point i stopped taking any and all medication and got pretty lucky with never really having to question it until now. its not that im against taking medication, but i felt as though at the time i was probably taking too much too often.
anyway since midday yesterday my allergies have been acting up causing me to lose sleep, appetite, and struggle to swallow. i went to wallgreens today after using some temporary-relief home remedies and bought some benedryl. the ability for that medicine to make you drowsy on top of having not taken any meds in awhile and not having eaten much that day caused my afternoon to be quite interesting. im on my 3 set now (take every 4 hours) and im dragging so im gonna call it a night. heres hoping this is behind me tomorrow.
